My most recent teaching opportunity took me to a local "memory care" facility where I worked with adults who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's. After a short lecture on Henri Matisse, my "students" created the works shown here. They reveal a "joie de vivre" which cannot be suppressed in some of us.
Just as a note of interest, I chose to explore the work of Henri Matisse with this group of adults because Matisse was creating art well into his 80s, and spent a good deal of his later life in a wheelchair. In the last few years of his life, he was completely bedridden.
One day, while confined to his bed, Matisse asked his daughter to bring him his fishing pole, Skeptical of his motivations, she finally did as he requested. Matisse took the fishing pole from her and tied a piece of charcoal to the end. He pointed to the white ceiling above his bed and exclaimed, "Look! A blank canvas!" then proceeded to fill his ceiling with drawings.
I hope you enjoy these works of art. Our local art association will be using them to create holiday cards for charity.
